# Add a new device

**What you'll do:** Set up Oten Drive on a second Mac (or your iPhone) and restore your vaults.

**Why it matters:** Your identity lives in your **User Key**, not in any one device. With your User Recovery Key you can restore access anywhere — and the server never held a key to help or hinder.

**Steps**

1. Install and open Oten Drive on the new device.
2. **Sign in** with the same Oten account.
3. When prompted, **import your User Recovery Key** to restore your account identity.
4. The app **automatically pulls your vault list**.
5. **Open each vault or Drive** with its password to bring the encrypted data down and unlock it. For a vault with Shadow Layers, enter the password for the layer you want.

**If you've lost your User Key**

* Use **Send request for losing User Key** from the app to start the recovery path, or restore via your **User Recovery Key** if you still have it. Without either, the account identity — and therefore the encrypted data tied to it — cannot be restored.

**Common mistakes**

* **Retyping the recovery key by hand.** Paste it to avoid transcription errors; it must match exactly.
* **Expecting files without opening the vault.** The list restores automatically, but files stay sealed until you unlock the vault with its password.
* **Forgetting to enable sync** on the new device, then wondering why changes don't appear.
