# What is Oten Drive

**Oten Drive** (internally *Stealth Vault*) is an end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) file vault for macOS, with an iOS app in final testing. It is built for people who treat attacks, coercion, and device seizure as realistic threats — not edge cases: investigative journalists, legal and security professionals, executives, and privacy-conscious individuals.

### What makes it different <a href="#what-makes-it-different" id="what-makes-it-different"></a>

* **Encrypted on your device.** Every file's contents, name, and folder structure is encrypted on your Mac (or iPhone) *before* it is written to disk or sent over the network. Plaintext exists only in memory, only while a file is open.
* **A zero-knowledge cloud.** Oten Cloud stores only opaque encrypted blobs plus a little bookkeeping (an ID, a version number, a timestamp). It holds no keys and cannot read your files — even under legal compulsion.
* **Shadow Layers.** A Vault can hold multiple independent, password-protected layers. Under pressure you can open a harmless decoy layer while your real data stays encrypted, hidden, and cryptographically unprovable. See [Shadow Layers](https://file+.vscode-resource.vscode-cdn.net/Users/mando/Silver%20Tiger/stealth-vault/product-docs/user-guide/shadow-layers/how-shadow-layers-work.md).
* **Panic.** A one-touch emergency action that instantly locks everything, hides the app, and — if you configure it — wipes local caches or drops to a decoy-only state. It works from local state, so it functions even offline.
* **A real drive.** On macOS your files live in **Finder**; on iOS they appear in the **Files** app. Adding, opening, renaming, sharing, and searching feel like ordinary cloud storage — the encryption is invisible until you need it.

### How it fits the Oten ecosystem <a href="#how-it-fits-the-oten-ecosystem" id="how-it-fits-the-oten-ecosystem"></a>

Oten Drive is part of the Oten security suite. It signs in through **Oten Identity (IDP)** for cloud sync and workspace features, and it shares the same **User Key** identity model as **Oten Note** — so the two products use one identity and one key hierarchy across your devices.

### What it is *not* <a href="#what-it-is-not" id="what-it-is-not"></a>

* It is **not** a generic cloud drive that the provider can scan "to improve your experience." It can't.
* It is **not** a note app (that's [Oten Note](https://oten.gitbook.io/note-support)) or a password manager.
* It does **not** offer a "forgot password" reset that Oten can perform for you. Recovery is by *your* keys only — your **User Recovery Key** and, for each vault, its **Vault Recovery Key**. See [User Key, Recovery & Devices](https://file+.vscode-resource.vscode-cdn.net/Users/mando/Silver%20Tiger/stealth-vault/product-docs/user-guide/concepts-in-1-minute/user-key-recovery-devices.md).

> **Availability:** Oten Drive is live on **macOS** (v1.0.13), shipping in 6 languages with Dark and Light themes. The **iOS** client is in TestFlight. Windows, Android, and web are not planned for the current roadmap.
